Biography

Sunday Enessi Ododo (SEO), a scion of the Ebira ancestry from Okene in Kogi State of Nigeria, is a versatile literary technician, performance aesthetician, theatre technologist, screenwriter, playwright, and poet, with outstanding literary and theatrical records. Born on 21st October 1962 in Maiduguri, north-east Nigeria, Sunnie Ododo (his creative writing name) is happily married with beautiful children. He is a tested director and actor of a long-standing reputation. SEO is a Professor of Performance Aesthetics and Theatre Technology in the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Maiduguri, Maiduguri, Nigeria and currently the General Manager/Chief Executive Officer of the National Theatre, Lagos, Nigeria, where magnificent massive restoration work is on-going under his watch. The robustness of Ododo’s scholarship is not only reflected in his deep-seated but humble and convivial nature but also in the rich quantity and engaging nature of his research and publications. Apart from being a theatre scholar, screenwriter, actor, poet and technical theatre practitioner in his highly fecund career of about four decades, he is reputed to be the exponent of the facekuerade theory in African theatre practice. He is an award-winning playwright who has made humongous contribution to the Nigerian (African) theatre theory and practice.
He is a living hero of the arts and a rallying point for cultural and creative industries (CCIs) in Nigeria and beyond. The making of the Nigerian theatre history is fraught with the canonical pedagoguery of diverse theatre iconoclasts within the frame of performance and literary theatre traditions. One thing that makes the works of these dramatists and theatre-makers still relevant is the profundity of the themes and issues they treated. In fine, diverse attempts to punctuate their thoughts by ‘new’ artistic directions have proven abortive as only a few have passed the crucibles of becoming. Sunday Enessi Ododo (SEO) is one of the few iconoclasts of the 21st century whose oeuvres have gone through such scholastic and practice crucibles and rightly deserves a place in Nigerian theatre history and epistemology.
Without a doubt, SEO has become a pan Nigeria theatre academic Facekuerade, to borrow the term he coined in theorizing the place of the mask-less Ekuechi masquerades of the Ebira people. It is indeed to the credit of this academic enigma that African scholars and researchers have begun to robustly interrogate the liminality and theatricality of the presence of the ancestral spirits in African mask-less masquerade arts and acts. It is his work that opened up the exploration of the margins of human consciousness of space and time beyond the wearing of any physical masques in African masquerade arts. The person, personality, and career of SEO as a theatre-maker, theatre technologist, theatre manager, theatreprenuer, and theatre teacher is diachronically inspiring and challenging at the same time. Ododo holds the fellowship of seven prestigious scholarly/professional/Creative bodies - fsonta, fta, fsna, fana, fnipr, faan and FNAL – Fellow, Nigerian Academy of Letters.

Marketing Contemporary Nigerian Theatre and Cultural Entertainment

Abstract

A major challenge facing Nigerian Theatre and entertainment – producing organisations is the marketing their productions and offerings. This usually results in poor patronage and non-viability of the production outfits. The intangible nature of theatre products poses a special challenge to these outfits because of the nature of the arts experience which makes their marketing both problematic and interesting.
This chapter examines the nature of theatre marketing and how opportunities can be derived from the challenges of selling intagible products through careful products branding, development of unique artistic concepts, aggressive solicitation and sponsorship campaigns, effective promotion and target marketing, innotive ticket selling approaches and so on.

The chapter further highlights the strategies of securing “contributed” income to augument “earned” income and concludes that the application of commercial marketing principles is the key to success in theatre business and that, if it is well envisioned, theatre business can thrive viably like other businesses.

Two Libretti

Abstract

In to return from the void, things fall apart after the collaborative victory of the Dentarean leaders. Absolute power soon corrupts absolutely. Dentarea becomes an arena of malfeasance manned by careless, carefree and rudderless leaders.

Now, unity, truthfullness, love, common sense and genuineness are all that are required to return from the void.

Sunnie Ododo’s creative ingenuity in adapting the Ebira mythology on the energy of witchcraft, and the counterforce of masquerade in Vanishing Vapour is an attempt to showcase the African solution to natinal and global threats.

To Return From the Void and Vanishing Vapour are creative exercises in music and dance respectively, to project the author’s contribution to national-building.

Sunnie Ododo (Sunday Enesi Ododo), a professor of perfomance aesthetics and theartre technology, heads the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Maiduguri, Maiduguri, Nigeria. He is a resourceful and engaging dramatist, port, stage designer and scholar. He currently serves as Vice-President of the Society of Nigeria Theartre Artists (SONTA), and the immediate past Vice-President of Association of Nigerian uthors (ANA); Nigerian’s foremost creative and literary bodies.
He is also the author of Hard Choice (Kraft, 2011) and Broken Pitchers (Kraft, 2012).

Fresh Perspectives on Clark

Songs of Gold

Attaining the golden age of creative witing is not a mean feat, but an evident testimony of enduring creative legacy and accomplishment. As a celebrated poet and dramatist, J.P. Clark-Bekederemo’s work herald as an intermingling of Wetern literacy techniques and traditional African theartre; a complexity which critics have contended with overtime.

By exploring Clark’s themes, images and speech patterns, a multi-discource approach has been adopted in these analyses, while layers of forceful agreements are made, not only for the strengths and weaknesses of his creative output but in recognition of the feats of this distinguished literary icon, and to document for posterity critical evaluations of his creative output.

Songs of Gold: Fressh Perspectives on Clark firmly places J.P. Clark between the post-colonial and post-modernist epochs as the study finds within its ideological thrust, Clarks contribution to the history and development of African literature.

The Editors

He currwntly serves as Vice-President of both the Society of Nigeria Theartre Artistes (SONTA) and Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).

Broken Pitches

The waiting is becoming endless. Hopes are dashed in the private and public domains. Every wait casts a denim of despair on the faces of the builders of a new dawn “inhaling the animated air of the germinating season” now looking forlorn as the “object of fancy meanders and disappears away into fleeting fantasy.”
The poems in this collection convokes images of despondency, failed leadership, lost labour and ennui in the face of love and abundance.

Broken Pitchers is a metaphor about our ebbing common aspirations a people and a nation. Who will enfire and remould these broken pitchers?

Sunday (Sunnie) Enessi Ododo is a poet, dramatist, stage designer and scriptwriter. Some of his poems have appeared in anthologies such as Rising Voices: An Anthology of New Nigerian Poetry, 1991, and Camouflage: Best of Contemporary Writing from Nigeria, 2006, etc. He is the author of Hard Choice (drama), 2011, and also the proponent of ‘Facekuerade theory’, which derives from the maskless transformational practices of traditonal Ebira masquerades (eku). He was the Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), and currently serves as Vice President of the society of Nigeria Theatre Artists (SONTA).

Professor Ododo is Head, Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria.
